Welcome to Brenham Area
Retired School Personnel
Supporting Educators in Retirement

Our next meeting is April 8th, 11 am,
at the Cannery in Brenham.
TRTA Day at the Captial

On March 26th, 14 of our members headed to Austin for the TRTA Day at the Capital. We meet with Trey Wharton and his assistant, Maddie, and Lois Kolkhorst's assistant Michael Vallee and discussed issues that are relevant to retired school personnel. Following a box lunch on the Capital grounds, we were able to meet briefly with Lois. We appreciate all of the Texas representatives and senators that supported Texas retired school personnel with the passage of our COLA and 13th check. And we appreciate our elected government representative in Austin who found the time in their busy schedules to meet with us!

Scholarship Applications
It's getting close to that time of year where we accept applications for our scholarships. Visit your high school counselor for eligibility and applications. Last year we awarded 2 scholarships to area students.

Service Project -
Veteran's Bags
Our members prepared and delivered bags to Veterans at pre-selected long term care facilities on Veteran's Day.

December Meeting and Scholarship Raffle

Our December raffle raised over $1,800 towards our scholarship funds. The live auction was quite spirited with great participation and fun!

Legislative Updates
Our state legislature is considering school vouchers. According to the Texas Tribune, "Under SB2, any child eligible to attend or already attending a public school could apply to the program." If demand exceeds the saving accounts' funding, children with disabilities and those from "low-income " households would use the majority of the funds. The bill defines a low-income household those whose income is "up to 500% of the federal poverty level. That would include any four-person household earning less than roughly $156,000." This is approximately $100,000 more than TEA's definition of low-income family of four (130 % to 185% of poverty level or between $40,000 to $57,720 ).
In a fiscal analysis of the bill, the $ 1 billion dollars currently proposed in the legislation is estimated to increase to $4.5 billion by 2030.

An additional concern is that vouchers will have an impact on retired teachers' pensions. Fewer teachers will be employed in public schools resulting in lower contributions into TRS, threatening its financial stability.
Please contact our State Representative, Trey Wharton to express you opinion!
